HMRC Duplicate Employment Records – A Growing Issue
HMRC are experiencing issues with duplicate employment records when companies change accountants mid-year. In some cases, this is leading to underpayments in tax, as employees appear to have two sets of income from the same employer.
HMRC are aware of the problem but have said it could take up to two years to resolve.
In the meantime, when preparing tax returns, it’s important to check for duplicate employment records—many people won’t realise there’s an issue because they don’t have personal Government Gateway accounts to flag it.
